Who We Are & What We Do

Patagonia Sur is a preeminent sustainable development company that invests in, protects, and enhances scenically remarkable and ecologically valuable ecosystems in Chilean Patagonia.

Patagonia Sur’s business model merges conservation and capitalism seamlessly and symbiotically. Our professional family includes two distinct, sustainable businesses: Real Estate and Carbon Offsets, and four non-profit organizations dedicated to conservation: Melimoyu Ecosystem Research Institute (MERI), The Patagonia Sur Foundation, Reforest Patagonia and Tierra Austral Foundation, Chile’s first land trust.

Patagonia Sur has developed a world-class, first-of-its-kind real estate development model focused on conservation. After years studying and exploring the region, we acquired seven remarkable, distinct, and unique ecosystems totaling more than 60,000 acres. Through an innovative and practical new Chilean legal agreement called the Servidumbre Voluntaria, we guarantee the permanent protection of these beautiful properties for future generations, allowing conservation-minded families to own and enjoy a magnificent ecosystem, with the assurance that its beauty will be preserved forever.

Our Carbon Offset Project is the first in Chile to use native-species trees to generate carbon offsets. Our project is validated by VCS, the Verified Carbon Standard, the worldwide leader in certification within the voluntary global carbon management industry. Patagonia Sur has already planted close to half a million trees in our Valle California property. Collectively, these trees are expected to sequester, or neutralize, a total of 160,000 tons of CO2. Did you know that an average family of four can offset their entire annual carbon footprint with Patagonia Sur for less than 82 cents a day?

For the long-term maintenance and integrity of this private land conservation model, we have created one of the first land trusts in Chile and South America — Fundación Tierra Austral — an independent organization, whose mission is to monitor and enforce the conditions of the Servidumbre Voluntaria. While the legal framework is consistent throughout, each Servidumbre Voluntaria may be tailored to meet the specific needs of the individual property and landowners involved.

We also work closely with our non-profit partner, The Patagonia Sur Foundation, whose mission is to encourage conservation and promote social and economic development by sponsoring English language and conservation education in towns near our properties, and supporting various micro-enterprises, such as organic farms and a weavers’ cooperative.

The Melimoyu Ecosystem Research Institute is an independent, non-profit organization whose mission is to research, interpret, and ensure the conservation of the extraordinary and pristine marine and terrestrial ecosystem of the 40,000-acre Melimoyu Nature Reserve and its surroundings. One of MERI’s most interesting and prominent projects is the ongoing passive acoustic monitoring of blue and humpback whales in the Gulf of Corcovado.

Leveraging the forestry experience gained through our carbon offsets business, and motivated by a devastating forest fire in Torres del Paine National Park in 2012, Patagonia Sur launched the largest reforestation campaign in Chile’s history: Reforest Patagonia. This high-profile, public-private partnership aims to plant one million native-species trees in Torres del Paine and other national parks in Chilean Patagonia, and has received numerous awards and exposure.
